It’s Time to Get Physical!

Kids Playing Football

It’s that time of the year again! School is winding down and the kids are looking forward to summer sports and camp. You’ve gotten everything ready for them except for that one last thing on your to-do list: getting your child their sports physical.

Now is actually the perfect time to get it done because you can make sure your son or daughter is ready to participate in summer activities, then when fall comes around that same sports physical paperwork will still be good to allow your child to take part in school sports. To help you be prepared for the upcoming camp and sports seasons, we’ve put together a quick list of the five W’s (who, what, when, where and why) of youth sports physicals.

Who needs a sports physical?

  • Sports physicals are often required for participation in youth summer programs including day or sports camp, sleepaway camp and for boy and girl scouts. Also, most public middle and high schools require a “pre-participation sports physical” prior to the start of school sports season.

What do I need to bring to my child’s sports physical?

  • You should contact your doctor’s office to get a copy of immunization records to bring to your visit. Unfortunately, MedSpring cannot verify any vaccines that were not administered at one of our centers.
  • Be sure to bring a copy of your sports physical form. Coaches, schools and camps will often provide the specific form they need completed for children, but if not, contact your child’s program or look online for “{school district name} sports physical form”.

When should I get my child’s sports physical?

  • MedSpring offers youth sports physicals year-round, however, we recommend coming in towards the end of the school year so that you can knock out your child’s sports physical for camp/summer sports and year-round school sports at the same time. Also, doctor’s offices and urgent care centers tend to get busy at the start of the school year.

Where should I go to get my child’s sports physical?

  • MedSpring offers competitive pricing across the greater Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago and Houston areas. Plus, all of our centers are open 8am-8pm seven days a week to fit your busy schedule!

Why should I get my child a sport’s physical?

  • Sports physicals are important in making sure your child is healthy and able to take part in a variety of physical activities with a minimal risk of injury. It is important to note that a sports physical is a specialized examination and not the same as a comprehensive annual physical from your child’s primary care physician.
